BMW ‘8-Series’ CS: officially terminated
BMW has established that it has stopped plans to manufacture a version of the Concept CS luxury four-door coupe to production.
As described by 4Car in July, fears over the global economic situation and extending adverse exchange rates intended that such a costly vehicle could not be feasible.
BMW chairman Norbert Reithofer pronounced yesterday: ‘Despite the great feedback this car has achieved so far, it does not match our ambitious profitability targets.’
BMW’s profits have decreased by 63% in the 3rd quarter of the year.
‘We want to focus our resources primarily on future projects and new technologies,’ said Reithofer. ‘In other words, currently our top priorities are Efficient Dynamics and Project i’.
‘Project i’ is BMW’s plan to create a tiny city car – and perhaps revitalize the Isetta brand-name, as used on the ‘bubble cars’ it built in the late 1950s. Production is planned for 2010 or 2011.
